Athletics
Running, jumping, and throwing are the natural inherited skills of man. These skills in a modified coded form are termed athletics. Sports and athletics contribute greatly to the development of character traits such as courage, determination, sense of achievement, team spirit etc. a person who competes in athletics is called an ‘athlete’. The most important game in athletics is races. There are the following types of races.
  • · Short distance race(the sprints)
  • · Middle distance race
  • · Steeplechase
  • · Long distance race(marathon)
  • · Hurdle race
  • · Relay race
Short distance race (100m,200m and 400)
In the 100 and 200 meters the exercise is with in the body’s capacity to storage oxygen, so the sprinter can afford to be reckless in the energy expenditure. The race is over before the waste products have built up serious amounts in the muscles and he knows that he can recover at the end of the race. In the 400 meters the discomfort and reduced efficiency of the muscles can be seen in the last 100 meters when, as Ron Pickering, a well known British commentator, has remarked, the athlete ‘is swimming in a see of lactic acid.’
