Techniques of Javelin Throw
The five basic skills of the events
  • The Grip
  • The Carry
  • The Approach
  • The Delivery
  • The Reverse
The grip: Normally two types of grip are used: (a) One-finger grip; and (b) Two-finger grip
In one finger grip the index finger placed above the cord and take hold at the top with the thumb and the other fingers gripping the javelin at the cord. In two-finger grip the index finger and the finger next to that go above the cord. And rest of fingers takes hold at the top with the thumb. However, in both the cases the javelin is placed across the palm of the hand at the top of the cord.
The Carry: Normally the javelin is carried over the shoulders, the front end is held pointing above and towards the line of throw. The Approach: Generally a run hundred feet or so is required to gain the initial momentum before the throw. Three check marks are normally made one at start, the second about eight strides from the first and third at seven or eight strides from the second. When the athlete approaches the third check point the Javelin is lowered and drawn back to take the final throwing position. The left side of the body faces the direction of the throw with the weight of the body on the right foot.
The Delivery: The distance achieved the throw greatly depends on this stage. At this stage the left foot is planed in frond to reduce the momentum of the body, while the trunk continues to move forward, transferring the body power to the Javelin by upward and forward extension of the right leg and rotation of the hips. The left shoulder is pulled down and the throwing arm, bend at the elbow pulls the javelin forward. This will bring the athlete in a position of the body weight is on the left leg and the Javelin is released with the full strength of the body.
The Reverse: As explained in the case of other throws, it is necessary to check the forward momentum at the time of release by reversing of the feet.
